#2000 – What’s it all about, blogger?

In February 2001, I set up a blog on Blogger (the revolution will be bloggerized). Eventually that blog got moved to WordPress but the plan was still the same:

I thought it would be interesting to keep a more diary-like journal during the coming year, perhaps not just focused on taking photos and sewing but a little about what I’m thinking about and doing.

Like the progress of the web in general (what’s a web page? do I have an e-mail-whatzthat?) it took awhile for the idea of blogging to get out there. There have been times that I’ve paid more attention to page views and traffic but in general I don’t. This is the closest thing to keeping a diary I’ve ever had but with some basic “rules” that I decided from the beginning – no deeply personal/personal life stuff, no bad-mouthing people except in a general world-view kind of way, no detailed work stuff. That’s just common sense. But it means that you didn’t read about my marriage or bad job moments or my divorce here, and that’s good. Those things weren’t my purpose for writing a blog.

If you look over in the sidebar you’ll see that this is post number 366 for 2011, and my records show it’s number 2000 since that first post in 2001. I think I’ve stayed the course of showing what I’m working on, what has my interest, what I saw, and what I’m thinking. You’ll also see that I hit a snag a couple years ago both in blogging and quilting. It’s nice to see the return of numbers over there.

Thank you faithful readers for your visits here – they mean a lot to me.

So happy milestone #2000 blog! And since this is October 1st, there’s time to add onto that by year’s end and by your next anniversary in February. Having passed this somewhat arbitrary deadline, let’s plow on and see what the road ahead holds for us.

Ten Years On: Done and Done

Finished sewing on the label tonight so it’s as finished as it can be. It was a long road for this quilt, but the real reason it was so long was just that a few other quilts happened along the way so this quilt sat quietly waiting. This was the quilt that went up on my new design wall in June 2010 when it seemed like quilts weren’t happening for me anymore. Putting it up there helped get everything else going and there wasn’t any doubt that this would actually get finished too. So, all good.

These are the photos I took late last night after finally finishing the binding too. Eventually I will set up the lights and all and take “real official photos.”

Nice day home

Yet another rainy, stormy day. Cats kept checking in with me. The Dink insists on laying too near wherever I’m working and that often gets her stepped on or yelled at. She doesn’t seem to take it personal.

Mainly she hung out while I cooked. I made Brandon’s grandmother’s skillet dinner: ground meat, sliced cabbage, ro-tel, elbow macaconi. Cooking and eating magic.

Then it was on to the main event: pizza from the biga I started last night. The dough was well-behaved even if I was a bit out of practice.

By the time it was time to put it in the oven I was more than ready to eat it! And it was delicious!

Now I’m finishing the bottom sleeve and I just pinned on the label. The end is nigh. I’m pondering the whole seasonal palette thing while stitching. Apparently I wasn’t the only thing who asked about the shorter time frame. Anyway, it will be nice to finish this one.

Rethinking the thinking

So it turns out there’s only 6 months to make the seasonal quilt for the SAQA exhibit I’d mentioned a couple weeks ago. Spent a couple days pondering and asking about this and feeling like I’m the only one who is concerned. Maybe it’s just that cutting, arranging and sewing all those pieces does actually take some time. Or the fact that I work a day job. Or that… well you get the idea.

My original notes for this project show that it would take at least 1092 squares. Probably more since the instructions say no borders and I’d need to make it larger to be sure it finished to the correct size (I tend to lose a couple inches due to quilting like a maniac).

So my next mission is to try and rethink my plan to see if that’s a reasonable timeframe and without blowing all my vacation and sleep time.
