Day 12 #NaPoWriMo2012

20.

I brush the clouds away
See their tails fading
against the blue?
and chase the leaves away
from the edges
of your garden.
In autumn, I set
the bulbs to sleep
and the plants to rest
before the snow.
Your windows wore my paint
each January morning
the needles and ropes
of a night’s designing.
Come March, I nudge
and tug the things
to place again
to bloom and sway
for you, m’lady. For you.
Summer I cannot stay
within the house
the fields and greens call
the nights long to dance
the moon warm and bright
the sun hot and drowsy
we dance with the world
in its fullness.
Tiptoeing in late
I brush the clouds away
from your dreams,
brush the care
from your brows,
before I rest myself.

Day 11 #NaPoWriMo2012

19.

I brushed away the cobweb
you’d left by the door
and I opened the door
to let that most wonderful
first warm air of spring inside.
I stood outside myself
letting it run over
my own body too long cold.
This wave of April,
yearly repeated miracle,
pushes us like a seed
green from the cold ground,
believing that the winter
will not come again.
We so quickly forget the cold
in remembering this warm breeze.
I stood in the yard,
face to the sun,
near sprouting leaves of my own
there in the still-brown yard.
You came to the open door and
felt the spring returning
the warm moist air
like a part of your skin.
You pushed back your hair
and sniffed the air.
You yelled, “Who
left the door open?”
before turning your face
to the sun.

Week Two #NaPoWriMo2012

Maureen over at NaPoWriMo reports that over 900 people have signed up for NaPoWriMo by throwing their blog/website into the mix. Isn’t that an amazing thought? Even if half the participants create a poem on any particular day, that’s a chunk o’new poems in the world each day. Amazing. Sometimes the prompts help, sometimes there’s a ready idea, all set to go, sometimes it’s like “it’s 11:30pm, where’s my haiku?”

Of course I’m writing a goal of 10 haiku every day. Most days I do that. One day I didn’t and I caught up the next day. It makes me laugh most days. Usually by number eight I’m getting into the swing of it and it’s pretty easy to do the last couple of haiku.

Today’s prompt has me scratching my head a bit but I can work on it:

Today’s prompt asks you to write a poem of the five senses. Pick an experience that is very sensory, and of which you have a strong sense memory — like hearing a train whistle, jumping into a rain puddle, catching that first whiff of lilac on a spring day, eating ice cream at the beach. One of those might work for you, or you might have one from your own past (eating jelly sandwiches in the woods springs to my particular mind). Then try to bring all five senses into it. What do you see, smell, feel, taste, and hear? Try to be as specific as possible, capturing that moment across all five senses.Package all that up, and you’ll have your poem. Good luck!

Day 10 #NaPoWriMo2012

Today NaPoWriMo suggested we lift (all right, steal) a line from a poem and use it to start one of our own:

But let’s stick to plain old stealing today by writing poems with their first lines lifted from other poems.

18.

All suddenly I saw the Fairy Queen;
At whose approach the soul of Petrarch wept,
And, from thenceforth, those Graces were not seen:
For they this queen attended; in whose stead

The Queen’s Appearance

Suddenly, to me, the Faery Queene
appeared and in her wake followed
love and virtue
while the world sparkled
nay, dazzled
as she approached,
her serene face blessing
every subject with grace
lifting all
with the presence
her being speaks.
She draws near.
Hand to breast
I make reverence to her.
As I rise, the loss of her,
the swallowing up of the world
as her view departs from us
removes all light, all air.

Reads! Lycanthropes! #NaPoWriMo2012

Last week I mentioned my haiku side project to a co-worker, one of the coolest kids around (hi Drew!) and he was all on board with it. He asked me if I’d ever heard of this book and would I like to borrow it? You betcha!

An ancient race of lycanthropes has survived to the present day...

Yes that’s right. An epic tale in poetry form. With Lycanthropes no less. Yeah, that should keep me busy for awhile.
