Are you a real ___________?

Writing isn’t a club with a secret handshake. You aren’t Pinocchio waiting for your Blue Fairy moment.

What you are is someone with a story, looking for at least a few other people to love it. Today, there are multiple ways to find them. Choose one. Love your choice. Be nice, and challenge your assumptions about people who chose a different route.

And if someone asks to see your official Hogwarts for Authors letter before they’ll give your book a try, come see me. I may not be a hack, but I am…

J.C. Lillis blogged about being a “real” writer, but it’s the same no matter what you’re doing. People less secure in what they’re doing will look down their nose and ask for your credentials and probably sneer behind your back (or maybe in front of you). It takes some guts to shrug your shoulders (preferably in front of them) and say ‘so what’. I’ve heard this so often in the quilting world: not traditional enough, not art quilt enough, not whatever enough.

Listen close and you’ll find them comparing their own work to everyone and putting it all in a line, nice and tidy.

Listen to the people looking at your work (rather than looking you up and down) and you’ll find they are drawn to it, it makes them think or laugh or cry or wonder. They’ll ask you questions, tell you what they like, take a picture or just stand and admire. Maybe come back and look again or bring someone else to see it.

How You Know

you’ve landed in a good bunch of people…. From the latest NaNoWriMo email

We appreciate your help and participation, last month and beyond. Like the Tenth Doctor said, “There’s a lot of things you need to get across this universe: warp drive, wormhole refractors… You know the thing you need most of all? You need a hand to hold.” Thanks for being one of ours.

write it large

You either move toward something you love or away from something you fear. The first expands. The second constricts. – Tom Crum, author of The Magic of Conflict

Random things

All kinds of weird things happening. The publishable things include

  • the car that rammed up behind me on the way home flashing his high beams frantically. I was in the middle lane, no one else around me, cruise control on a hair above speed limit. I just sat waiting to see what would happen. He passed me and then a short distance later, I passed him easily. No idea what that was all about.
  • iPhone popped up a message that there was new music ready to listen to, the Hobbit soundtrack. It had been downloading without me knowing about it and BLAM! 130 minutes of Howard Shore goodness. Much happy commuting time results. Going to SEE the Hobbit on Friday!

    Sneaky music

  • Still reading through my NaNoWriMo thing and enjoying the tale. Finally, it’s been long enough that I can sit back and think, oh, that’s not quite right… maybe that plot line should be different… maybe this is too repetitious. That’s awesome to have a little distance.
  • watched a good part of the live Sound of Music and really super enjoyed the live tweeting about it and all the reviews afterwards.
  • Yelled at one or two people,
  • Fell madly in love with Benedict Cumberbatch all over again.
  • I don’t remember what I was talking about…
