Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light. – Albert Schweitzer

Day Four NaHaiWriMo

Spent the day with Mom as she had successful outpatient surgery. Although it was amazing to be sent home a couple hours after the whole thing started with minimal instructions and all, it was, let us say, nap-inducing. So we stayed home and I think did all right.

The other part of my day started with a challenge from Holly to use the OED word of the day in a haiku. That was hard because it is a really obscure, archaic word although the definition is cool:

nudiustertian, adj.
View as:
Etymology: < classical Latin nudiusterti?nus (2nd cent. a.d.) < nudius tertius ... Obs. rare—1. Of or relating to the day before yesterday. 1647 N. Ward Simple Cobler Aggawam 26 When I heare a..Gentledame inquire..what [is] the nudiustertian fashion of the Court; I mean the very newest.

It didn’t give that info but I decided I’d play the word as a five-syllable thing and call it a day but in the end it got used a bit differently:

In the stream of style,
are we nudiustertian
or overmorrow?

Another co-worker tweeted: “Jaguar can interior forest” and I allowed that interior forest would be a good bit of haiku. He explained finally that this was someone’s interpretation of written Swedish: jag kan inte förstår.

interior forest
trees too thick to view the truth
I can’t understand.

I now realize that interior forest isn’t quite five syllables but I’m too proud of the wordplay in this haiku to play with it further so I’m keeping it as is, LOL. Maybe I should have left the original Swedish.

Last night I did a whole lot of calming, deep breaths and practiced making marks on paper.

And finally, a photo of Mom taken by Barb, my long-time co-worker and mom’s hair stylist:

NaHaiWriMo Day Three

widely bristling
and tickling and measuring:
my cat’s white whiskers

tonight fell apart.
too many reasons unsaid.
too tired. too undone.

just an inch of snow
in the darkness the headlights
show the freshened fields.

window, opening.
the stillness of the new pane
where in and out meet.

NaHaiWriMo, Day One

aka – Happy February first. Did you think there wouldn’t be haiku today? LOL

Dabble in magic
The known world seeks to dazzle
Rising to your touch

Trees embellishing,
Gentle scallop, earth-sky seam
Delicate picot
