Day 7, NaPoWriMo

Worked out the gist of this while driving to work this morning, wrote it down at lunch and re-worked it tonight.

The raspy, ragged news –
hard listening while commuting
whether public radio bass or
British schooled voice.
The sentences get tangled
as the car moves along,
the light of today increases
but the grasp of today
in places outside this car:
Ukraine, China, Washington,
science, history, politics –
scramble and tear
trying to focus, losing the horizon
until, at last, the radio’s button
restores peace to this world.
The sky spits rain at the car.
The windshield blades wipe tears away.

And turns out, I could manage the NaPoWriMo.net prompt today because I had stuck one of my most favorite little inanimate objects into my pocket this morning. I showed it to a couple co-workers, telling one it was probably the most “Apple-like” thing I own (not actually an Apple product of course): it fits my hand perfectly, feels wonderful, fulfills its purpose perfectly and is gaze-grabbing.

A small thing of love
fits perfectly in my hand
wooden needle case.

My needle case (thanks Marge!) Needle case, doing its thing

From afar

This landed in my mailbox today. I wonder…

Tools of the Trade

I’ve been experimenting a bit with how to proceed on the current WIP and so I’ve had my sewing machine pressure feet out, trying some odd ones. I only broke one needle with an ill-directed swing of a zigzag, LOL, so that’s not too bad.

Day 6 NaPoWriMo

Kinda had to go there – The Opposition of Mars. (Go here for more info)

The Opposition.
looking up: the orange and blue
It’s Mars and Spica.

I had zero doubt:
The bright orange dot up high
Soft blue Spica low.

Mars, orange and ice capped
it’s summer there, ice melted
martians on va-kay.

As mars travels ’round
in the planetary mix
we meet near or far.

Kudos to Rebecca Fedler over at Coordinated Mayhem for a wonderful poem in the Golden Shovel form written for day five. At the bottom of her poem she explains what it was all about.

Day 5, NaPoWriMo

well that was a nice unexpected 15 minute or so nap…

My little and oldest cat Deirdre, ruler of the crew
your purr so sweet, you’re always watching,
attentive, checking on me over and again
here you are, head butting my laptop.
here you are, trying to walk behind my head.
what say you lay down here next to me and let me work
or I can give you a preventative hug.
Sorry I can’t be still enough to let you snooze
you’re tired from inspecting my coat, my bag,
my half-filled cup of tea, my fingers
following me down the stairs to check the food bowls
and back up to see that I refill the water dish.
Too many pets and you move away with a look
but a moment later you’re back to give a kiss
I stroke your head and get batted in return.
