When your views on the world and your intellect are being challenged and you begin to feel uncomfortable because of a contradiction you’ve detected that is threatening your current model of the world or some aspect of it, pay attention. You are about to learn something. This discomfort and intellectual conflict is when learning is taking place. — William Drury, Sr College of the Atlantic
From the Quote Box – Life on the Edge
What to do when you need a distraction
I’d left my laptop at home this morning – afterall, what are the chances of needing it at the dentist? right?
Well I didn’t need it there, and oh what an adventure that was… but I had a couple hours to kill this morning and I could have used it. I had what everyone can use though – moleskine and pen so I got some productive NaNoWriMo stuff done at B&N.
After that, I tried to get into the holiday shopping state of mind but it just wasn’t happening. I walked around watching all the people who were like “I’ll take that and those and this here and this whole pile of stuff” standing shoulder to shoulder with the other people who totally work the B&N discounts, sales, membership and whatever.
Anyway, the only thing I found of interest was a big waterproof map of just London, Southern England, Wales and Cornwall. Wait, you mean I can’t zoom in on this paper map? LOL we’re so spoiled by digital maps!
And tonight I worked on my current travel plans… I needed the computer for that too, LOL.
The power of coincidence or something
I’m not sure how to explain what has happened over and over again. My NaNoWriMo story is set mostly in Wales and time and time I rummage on the web for some bit of a hint on where something might happen, or even just a stray piece of info and the exact place appears, conveniently located and properly old and with marvelous history or whatever is needed. Sometimes it starts with a photo.
Tonight it started with iTunes offering me a tune played by John Redbourn and his band of merries, a tune called Planxty Llanthony. I somewhat idly put Llanthony into search and damn if there isn’t a Llanthony Priory in reach of the Black Mountains within Brecon Beacons… that’s just ridiculous.
Llanthony Priory is a partly ruined [1] former Augustinian priory [2] in the secluded Vale of Ewyas, a steep sided once glaciated valley within the Black Mountains area of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Monmouthshire, south east Wales.
Well then.
Look up a planxty
Llanthony Priory
magically appears.
Each person…
Each person is valuable and they need to believe that, themselves. We need to tell and show them that and we need to believe it both about them and ourselves.
Tuesday night,
First off, thrown into the quote box:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? … There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. …As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. — Marianne Williamson
After work I toodled over to Professor Java’s for the TGIO* party with the other NaNoWriMo participants. We had one room and it was pretty cozy and it was filled with writers who just couldn’t stop talking. At write ins, we alternate twenty minutes of work and twenty minutes of chatter so we’re a pretty chatty group, no doubt about it.
We played a few games, gave away a couple things and mostly talked. Most of it was about what we’d been writing about for at least 30 days. We talked a little bit about things we might do next year which gave the whole thing a sort of Brigadoonish spin.
One of the questions someone threw out as a focus question was: What will you write about next year? I took the closest piece of paper and wrote down three bullet points without too much trouble… and then BLAM the fourth, which has potential for causing some problems that need solving! Perfect. I better tuck that list away digitally to keep it safe for when writing must begin.
I’m really glad I went to more write-ins this year. Last year I hosted some at the library and they were fun but when it came to the end party, I couldn’t quite get myself to go. This year I was looking forward to it.
* Thank Goodness It’s Over
