That Whole Internet Thing (not just the cat memes)

Back in the day, before people had personal computers or a glimmer of what that might mean, I went to the New England Folk Festival in the burbs of Boston. It was a yearly event and still goes on. That year, the nerdier nerds of the folk dance community had set up something called the Internet Petting Zoo where you could sit down at a screen and look at something called “web pages” which had information about dance and singing and other kinds of events in places other than the one we were in. All Hail, the Knitter!

It was a red-letter day for me when I got to work today because these were tucked into my little tiny cubby. These mittens, started as a learn-to-knit project on four needles with wonderful wool yarn in a color I loved… and which languished as an unfinished project for many many years. (I remember starting them on a long-ago trip to New Hampshire)

Then a wonderful knitting lady, Clea, came to work with me and I offered her some of the yarn that I’d acquired and even this unfinished set of mittens and its remaining yarn. She said yes!

And so today I was amazed to have two mittens, with thumbs, of a wonderful wool yarn in a color I love – to wear! And blessed to know someone who could pick up a project started by someone who knew very little and finish it so wonderfully. Many many thanks to Clea!

Man, is it cold!*

It’s somewhere between minus six and minus nine Fahrenheit but with a stiff breeze. This has the weather guys all aflutter about killing windchill factor and while it’s a serious consideration, it’s nothing we haven’t seen and endured before.

* Bonus trivia question: When was that line recorded, regarding temps in the minus 20’s – January of _____?
