Symbols you’ve seen and wondered about:

Thanks to Sandy:

If I hadn’t badgered FIAT for an actual owner’s manual I’d have nothing to look up my car’s idiot lights. These are much better.

The Coming New World

At least I’m hopeful, which is more than I was a few weeks ago, that the world can become a better place, where people of many beliefs and orientations can co-exist. I’m not asking anyone to change their religion or to change their sexual preference. I’m only asking that you accept that others may think differently from you and that they have the same right to do so as you do. This means you can’t go around saying others are damned to hell for all eternity, even if that’s what you think your religion believes and you pretty much should be treating everyone like everyone else because, it turns out, we are all just human beings, no matter what we believe. You can use your religions beliefs to make you a better person, but please leave me out of that.

Ethical behavior applies equally. That’s why the “do unto others” thing is found almost universally. That’s why prohibitions about stuff like murder – found everywhere.

So without further ado, some haiku for the occasion.

I’m not tolerant
in any way shape or form
of intolerance

beliefs may differ
behavior and tolerance
apply equally

you are quite outraged.
i’m sorry equality
disturbs your world view.

the change that’s needed
is to allow others room
for their own beliefs

The start of yesterday

So much goodness yesterday but yesterday morning started with this moment at Stewart’s. I had to fire up the voice memo on my phone to capture the scene which I’ve started working on.

Transcription from phone:

he walked to his car holding the cup tightly between his fingers
shaking the cup as men do to stir up the sweetness inside
the dog said how glad he was to see him, with his whole body
the man smiled as he got into the car

and then today’s take:

The skinny man, jeans, baseball cap,
white tee, left our local dairy shop
walking to his car in the brightness
he held the cup top and bottom,
tightly between his thumb and fingers
shaking it as men do around here
to stir up the sweetness inside
pointing the little spurts of coffee
away from himself,
putting off the first delicious sip.
The mongrel he’d left to wait
said how glad he was to see him,
with his whole body and eyes
hanging over the front seat, wagging.
The man smiled back as he got into the car
all three of us awash in the
rare perfection of a June morning
raising us up with a light hope
and happiness.

Geeks ‘R’ Us

I spent a lovely evening after work with Mom. She fed me a delicious dinner and we chatted about all kinds of things while doing all kinds of things. What sort of things did we do, you might ask?

We set up her new iPad Air. Was it hard you ask? Not at all, Mom did it herself and it was easy because she had an iCloud backup and so it put everything that had been on her old iPad onto the new iPad. No problem at all.

But that’s not all, oh no.

We set up her new iMac computer. Was that hard? Oh no, not at all. I did the physical set up and got it going but turns out, Mom had a Time Machine back up of her old iMac and it just pulled all the stuff over to the new iMac. There was one small glitch with mail but I got most of it back from the back up and we’ll figure out the rest. All her settings and everything else were there.

We had to reset one password which we did easily and by the time I left, after a celebratory bowl of ice cream, it was all up and running like nobody’s business. We played around with some of the new iPad camera options.

Heck we even looked up the manual for Mom’s thermostat and printed that out from the iPad for future reference.

Quite the day all around, with the SCOTUS decision and then seeing this go by in my twitter feed:

More this

Because some days might need more cowbell but, for me, they often need more coffee.
