Begin News Cycle

Attack at Orlando Gay Club Kills About 20

Another shooting, another newscast
soft somber tones, furrowed serious brows
explaining the questions, looking at the camera.
Go to live. Begin news cycle. Begin:
Cue the dark street scene, many lights,
people running, hugging, wet faces, clutching for air
terrorist? insane? were there more?
the motive yet unknown. Twenty plus
one more only a few can care about now.
If only, we think, someone had known yesterday.
Why didn’t anyone do something yesterday?
Tonight official statements, things we can’t comprehend.
Tomorrow spontaneous flowers and memorials.
All week heart-felt tributes, funerals,
fading questions and a return to everything else
your regularly scheduled programming.

As I was writing this news broke that the number killed had risen to fifty and the name of the man responsible was released. The story is still developing.

Esse Quam Videra

She won’t see it, but a young woman I helped today was wearing a ring like this. OK, but newly minted because she had just graduated from Holy Names. Mine came from Marylrose. I changed the subject about WHEN I had gotten the ring because it wasn’t really the point. We talked about her new computer and where she was going to college and that Holy Names was going to become middle and high school only. She asked who I knew there and I allowed probably the only person I knew was the Head of School and that when I’d been there she’d been a fresh out of college, rookie English teacher.

Anyway, she said, “you should wear your ring!”

I wear other rings now but for the record here’s the ring.

Esse Quam Videra.

To be, rather than to seem to be.

Thursday? Already?

Came home to a package from B&H – shouldn’t have put this off so long. Got a quick release head for the monopod that lives in my trunk but it turns out it might live on the small (as in desktop or car-roof size) tripod that lives there instead. Why? because I have a mount for my iPhone that will mount on one of quick release plates I got! And the other plate will stay attached to my Lumix. That way it can all zip and out of that and my big tripod. Talk about simplifying my life! Love quick-release!

In other news, had a good first critique session with two writing pals. They were full of comments and questions and suggestions and encouragement. I had a good time looking at my stuff and their stuff with them, talking over alternatives, word choices – all that stuff. Now I’m going to sew for a little while and then look at the written comments tomorrow after I’ve had some time to smile over the whole thing.

I work a lot by myself and the flip side of that is being able to enjoy sharing my work with others, and seeing how others react and interact with what I put out there. Makes it all worthwhile and keeps me going forward.

After a nice dinner with Mom I stopped by to visit the sunset. Click the photo for a small Flickr album of photos.

Oh the woes of an artist!

First world artist woes: Getting your CV to fit on two pages!

(PS There should be a photo of the first local strawberries of the season here but somehow I managed to eat them instead. Sorry. Not Sorry)
