Quilting Update

At the risk of hubris, I am going to report on this push to finish my current quilt top.

A couple of seams to sew the last three strips to the last chunk and then a handful of seams to sew the chunks together. Ironing will ensue.

I’m listening to the unabridged Audible version of The Fellowship of the Ring. There are parts of quilting process where audio books work and parts where they don’t and long repetitive piecing is definitely a space for a good story. Ah, Lothlorien!

Grazed a pin last night while sewing and stopped to clean the machine and change the needle so all will be good to go today.

A source of pleasure for me in this part of the process is when all the edges become tidy. In my mind I can imagine what all those jittery pieces will look like sewn together but it’s nice to see it become that way. And I am quite pleased to open up a newly-sewn seam and see all the seams and points and whatever falling exactly where they should. I am sewing this carefully and that helps. I have unsewn some places but have only had to do that when a seam got caught flapped the wrong way.

Hope I don’t regret this report later today… knocking on wood! OK coffee and then sewing!

Saturday Night into Sunday

On the way home from work, I did what I laughingly called “binge grocery shopping”. You would have thought I hadn’t eaten in weeks for all the goodies in my cart – vegetables and fruits, meat, bread. I could barely fit it in the frig! Oh yeah, some limeade and lemons and limes and that called for replacing my bottle of rum. All because a co-worker had given me a beautiful bag of fresh mint.

I took this bounty and made a simple syrup 2 parts water to one sugar. When it started to simmer I threw in all the mint and let it steep awhile. I strained it and then… I poured it into two ice cube trays and froze it! At least, I hoped it would freeze. Tonight when I looked in the freezer they were indeed frozen but softer of course than regular ice cubes.

I am pleased to report that a couple of those in the glass with the rest of the ingredients and some normal cubes made a quite tasty mojito.

After dinner and my beverage I got down to working on the work in progress,

Today, This.

We may all need this in the coming weeks, so I post this useful bit of iconography:

Life Inside and Out

Tonight I had another look at the hosta when I got home and then I couldn’t resist admiring the primroses (not roses at all) and the moss roses (about as ultimately and fragrantly rose as you can get!).

primroses and roses

Then I got all my stuff together for tonight’s writing critique. Computer, AC adaptor, earbuds – oh wait – I have something better than that… Yes I do. And they worked great! Thank you WoW raiding days!

I sewed five more rows together for a total of 20 rows in three hunks of multiple rows waiting to be sewn together. You may be asking yourself: why not just sew one row to the next until all thirty-one are sewn together? Well, it’s a pain to keep moving all that stuff around and through the sewing machine over and over again, but it’s also a way to keep things from being handled too much and needing additional and repeated ironing. You’ll just have to trust me on that.
