One of my quilts is touring in a collection called “Roots of Racism: Ignorance and Fear.” It’s currently on display in Atlanta GA and there’s a great article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about the show. Especially exciting to me:
The traditional repeat-pattern quilts in this show are generally quite successful artistically in addition to making pointed observations about the perception of difference. An excellent example is “Warp, Weft, Rift” by Mary Beth Goodman, who wove broad strips of raw-edged fabric, using warm hues for the warp and cool ones for the weft. She then attached the woven block to a quilted black background, stretching it out of line in three spots to create large concentrically stitched circles. In an otherwise predictable design, these circles impart an ominous tone solely because they depart from the rigidity of the grid.
