I don’t know why we’re alive
\nor how we stay alive
\nbeyond the plumbing
\nand electrical explanations
\nof how the living part works:
\nblood and fluids flow,
\nelectrical impulses travel,
\nthe stone my toe meets
\nmakes an impact between my ears.
\nThat’s not the whole of it
\nbut more the minimum:
\nenergy imbibed and spent,
\ngalaxies of cells doing things
\nwe’re unable to replicate
\nin full or otherwise
\nand yet we try.
\nWe investigate and study and
\noften, against all odds,
\nfigure it out, or the next bit.
\nAnd even though our ability
\nto scrape up a new life
\nis that most instinctive,
\nwe learn to cling to that life
\nto cherish and swaddle it.
\nBut there’s more still,
\nour ability to create
\nsomething new: a story
\nthat inspires or horrifies;
\n a view, beauty never seen;
\na theory, which someone else will
\nspend a lifetime and prove
\nsurprising even themselves;
\na slice of magic – how it all works.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
