A surveyor’s stake with a hot pink flag
\nstood sentinel above the highway’s bank
\nThe wisp of marker tape fluttering free
\nas wind sailed by above the commuting
\ncars which sped along the road each morning
\nSeeing the flutter who could help but ask
\nwhat was being staked out, what was measured
\nso far from the shoulder and the pavement.
\nBut there, mere yards away from the marker
\nAnother straight and still above the road
\nnot so gaily flagged but a stroke of white
\ndashed near the top of the brown and black head
\nLooking again, I saw the eyes first one
